Character of the Manaslu Trek:
Following the paths of Tibetan traders, you will trek along ancient trade routes into the Tsum Valley. With the guidance of local, experienced Sherpa guides, you will hike from lodge to lodge around the 8,163-meter-high Manaslu. It has only been possible to complete this trek via a lodge-to-lodge tour in recent years. The journey is marked by its untouched nature, ethnic minorities, and a route that lies somewhat off the usual tourist trails. You will traverse nearly all climate zones, from jungle terrain to the eternal ice at the 5,110-meter-high Larke Pass. During the first days, you will slowly ascend through a dramatic gorge into the high valley of Samagoan, where you can acclimatize and take day hikes at the foot of Manaslu. The crossing of the Larke Pass, at 5,110 meters, can be demanding depending on conditions, requiring good physical fitness. The lodges are simple, clean, and operated by local families.
Difficulty Rating:
- Challenging trekking tour
- Accommodation in basic but clean lodges hosted by local families (expect limited comfort!)
- Average altitude gain per day: 500m-1200m
- Daily hikes with a daypack: 5-8 hours, up to 9-12 hours when crossing the pass
- Average altitude: 1500m-4000m
- Maximum altitude: 5,150m
- Maximum sleeping altitude: 4,450m
Requirements:
Moderate to demanding trekking. You should be a healthy, fit, and experienced hiker with good surefootedness. You should be able to handle hikes of 4-8 hours without difficulty, with up to 10-12 hours on days involving the pass crossing. Weather changes such as snow and rain should not disturb you. A sports medical check-up before the trip is recommended. Avoid overexerting yourself by walking too quickly; slow and steady walking is especially important in the early stages of the trek as your body adjusts to the new altitude, as well as the changes in sleeping and eating routines. A certain level of comfort sacrifice is required. Due to the high altitude, altitude sickness can occur, and immediate descent to lower elevations may be necessary in case of an emergency. You will need a warm sleeping bag and a down jacket for the trek.
Note on road construction in the Nepal / Manaslu & Annapurna Region:
In recent years, a road has been built up to Macha Khola/Jagat (Manaslu). This road is occasionally crossed in sections, and there are short stretches where the trek follows the gravel road. If you have any questions regarding this before your trip, please feel free to contact us.
